Residents Have Green Thumbs – Pottersway House Gardening Club Flourishes

Ever since Pottersway House opened its doors, one of the first activities that captured the hearts of our residents was the gardening club. Recognising the joy and therapeutic benefits of nurturing plants, we invited residents to join this club, which quickly became a cherished monthly tradition. Every month, our dedicated gardeners gather to tend to the raised beds, planting a variety of herbs and vegetables that they nurture throughout the seasons.

The gardening club was established with a simple but meaningful purpose: to help residents keep their hobbies alive while fostering a sense of accomplishment through growing their own fresh produce. Gardening offers so much more than just a pastime, it provides physical activity, mental stimulation and an opportunity to reconnect with nature, which is especially valuable in a residential care setting.

The benefits have been truly wonderful to witness. Residents relish spending time outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine as they work together. This shared activity encourages social interaction and the building of new friendships, contributing positively to their emotional well-being. Beyond the camaraderie, there is a tangible reward in watching plants grow and being able to harvest the fruits, or rather, herbs and vegetables, of their labour. Just last week, residents proudly harvested fresh thyme from their garden, which was then used by our Chef to enhance a delicious chicken dish served at lunch, bringing their gardening efforts full circle.

At Pottersway House, our gardening club is more than just a hobby; it’s a source of joy, pride, and connection that enriches the lives of our residents and brings our community closer together.
