Our VE Day Celebrations
On Wednesday 8th May, the team and residents at Pottersway House came together to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a heartfelt and joyful celebration. In a moving tribute to this historic day, the care team organised a traditional street party and invited loved ones and members of the local community. This event brought everyone together to reflect, remember, and enjoy one another’s company in the warmest of ways.
Our communal areas were transformed with bunting, flags and touches of red, white and blue and echoed the scenes that would have filled streets up and down the country back in 1945. Our resident chef prepared a special buffet-style lunch, filled with delicious finger foods, homemade cakes, and nostalgic wartime favourites. There was something for everyone to enjoy, and many residents commented on how it reminded them of when they were children.
The atmosphere was truly special, with laughter and music carrying through the home. Residents and staff alike joined in singing well-loved wartime songs and classics from the era which created a sense of togetherness and memory. Many residents spoke fondly of their own recollections of VE Day, whether as young children or young adults, and there were touching moments of reflection shared among the group.
The event offered a chance not only to celebrate but to honour those who lived through the war, and to appreciate the peace and community we enjoy today. At Pottersway House, we believe it’s important to mark these moments in history, particularly for our residents who remember them first-hand. It was a day filled with smiles, stories, music and togetherness, and we were proud to play our part in honouring such a significant occasion.
